秘密花园（上）：荒凉庄园与尘封钥匙

After a fever swept through her family home in India, Mary was left entirely alone. She was sent across the sea to Yorkshire, England, to dwell with her mysterious uncle, Mr. Archibald Craven, a reclusive widower who lived in an immense, six-hundred-year-old mansion surrounded by windswept moors.

Mrs. Medlock, the stern housekeeper, escorted Mary through the dark, cold night. When Mary awoke the next morning, a bright Yorkshire fire was crackling in the hearth, and a cheerful young housemaid named Martha was setting down breakfast. Unlike the silent Indian servants Mary was used to, Martha spoke with a hearty dialect and treated Mary with warm honesty.

'What is out there beyond the windows?' asked Mary, looking at the boundless gray expanse. 'That's the moor,' Martha answered with a smile. 'It looks bare now in the winter, but in the spring it smells of sweet gorse and heather, and the sky seems miles higher.'

Finding nothing interesting to do inside the vast house of a hundred closed rooms, Mary put on her warm woolen coat and went out into the gardens. The fresh Yorkshire wind blew against her pale cheeks, and for the first time in her life, she felt her sluggish blood begin to move.

She walked along the stone paths and encountered an old gardener named Ben Weatherstaff, who was digging in a vegetable plot with a grumpy expression. On an apple branch nearby perched a cheerful little bird with a bright red breast—a robin redbreast.

When Ben whistled softly, the robin flew over and tilted its head with curious, bright eyes. 'He's the only friend I have in this place,' grunted Ben. The robin looked straight at Mary and chirped a friendly melody. Mary felt a strange, warm sensation in her heart; for the first time, she wanted to be liked by another living creature.

Martha told Mary a curious story that evening. Ten years earlier, Mr. Craven's beloved young wife had died tragically in a walled garden after falling from a tree branch. Overcome with grief, Mr. Craven had locked the garden gate, buried the key deep in the earth, and forbidden anyone ever to enter again.

The thought of the locked, forbidden garden captured Mary's imagination. Every day, she ran through the gardens, skipping with a wooden jump rope Martha's mother had sent her. Her pale cheeks took on a healthy rose color, her appetite returned, and her sour temper began to soften.

One windy afternoon, Mary was following the friendly robin as he hopped along a stone wall covered in thick ivy. The robin perched upon a mound of freshly turned earth made by a burrowing dog. As Mary looked down, she spotted a loop of rusty metal half-buried in the soil.

She knelt down with a racing heart and pulled the object from the ground. It was an old, heavy iron key, covered in green rust! 'Could this be the key to the secret garden?' Mary whispered in awe.

The next day, a strong gust of wind blew across the high stone wall, lifting a heavy curtain of trailing ivy. Behind the leaves, Mary saw the round iron handle of a hidden door! With trembling hands, she inserted the rusty key into the lock. She turned it with both hands—and with a quiet click, the heavy oak door swung open.

Mary slipped inside and pushed the door shut behind her. She was standing inside the secret garden! It was the sweetest, most mysterious place imaginable. High stone walls enclosed the space, and ancient rosebushes climbed over trees like gray lace, weaving delicate canopies overhead.

The garden was silent and dormant under the winter sky. Everything looked dry, gray, and brown. Mary wondered if all the plants were dead after ten years of neglect, or if life still slept beneath the cold earth.

Bending down, Mary examined the dark soil. To her immense delight, she spotted tiny green spikes poking through the dry grass—pale green shoots of snowdrops, crocuses, and daffodils pushing toward the sunlight! 'They are alive!' Mary whispered with joyful tears.

She took a small stick and began clearing away the dry leaves and dead weeds around the tiny green sprouts, giving them air and room to breathe. She worked for hours until the sun began to dip below the moor, feeling happier than she had ever been in her life.

That evening, Mary asked Martha if she could have a small spade and some flower seeds to plant a garden of her own. Martha smiled and said her younger brother, Dickon, would bring the tools from the village.

Dickon was twelve years old, with blue eyes, upturned freckled nose, and a magical charm that drew wild moor animals to his side. When Dickon arrived with a spade and flower seeds, Mary knew she had found a true companion. Leading Dickon through the hidden door into the secret garden, Mary watched his face light up with wonder. Together, beneath the awakening spring sky, they vowed to bring the sleeping garden back to life.
