Spring arrived on the Yorkshire moors like a wave of green magic. The dark earth softened, yellow gorse and purple heather began to blossom, and the air was filled with the sweet scent of rain and growing things. Inside the secret garden, Mary and Dickon worked tirelessly every morning, pruning dead branches and nurturing the emerging flowers.
Dickon taught Mary how to tell living wood from dead wood by scratching the bark with a thumbnail. 'Look,' he said, showing her a moist green line beneath the brown surface. 'This rosebush is as alive as you and me!' Under their gentle care, the garden began to awaken in a riot of fresh green leaves and budding roses.
One rainy night, Mary lay awake in her large four-poster bed. Down the drafty corridor, above the howling wind, she heard the unmistakable sound of a child crying in distress. Determined to discover the truth, Mary lit a candle and walked through the dark, winding hallways of Misselthwaite Manor.
She pushed open a heavy tapestried door and found herself in a luxurious bedroom. Lying upon an enormous bed was a boy of ten, with large, frightened gray eyes and a pale, delicate face. The boy stared at Mary as if she were a ghost.
'Who are you?' asked the boy in a trembling voice. 'Are you a dream?' 'No,' Mary replied gently. 'I am Mary Lennox, your cousin. Who are you?' 'I am Colin Craven,' the boy answered.
Colin explained that he was an invalid who had spent his entire life in bed, hidden from the world. His father could barely bear to look at him because Colin's eyes reminded him of his deceased wife. The doctors and servants believed Colin was destined to become a hunchback and die young, which made him angry, fearful, and hysterical.
Mary sat beside Colin's bed and told him about the vast Yorkshire moor, the cheerful robin, and the wonder of spring. For the first time in his life, Colin stopped crying and listened with fascination. 'Do you know about the secret garden?' Colin whispered.
Mary visited Colin every day, bringing laughter and stories into his gloomy room. When Colin threw a furious tantrum one afternoon, screaming that he had a lump growing on his back, Mary marched into the room, examined his back bravely, and declared firmly: 'There is no lump on your back at all! You are just as straight as I am, but you are making yourself sick by lying in this dark room!'
Her blunt honesty shattered Colin's fears. Soon, Dickon brought his tame animals—a young fox, two squirrels, and a newborn lamb—into Colin's bedroom. Colin laughed with delight, and a spark of hope was ignited in his heart.
One warm spring morning, Mary and Dickon placed Colin in a wheeled chair and wheeled him quietly through the gardens. Dickon pushed the chair through the ivy-covered doorway, and Colin entered the secret garden for the very first time.
The garden was in full, glorious bloom. White and pink roses cascaded from the walls, iris and lilies stood tall along the borders, and the sun shone warm and golden. Colin looked up at the blue sky and took a deep breath of fragrant air. 'I shall get well!' he shouted with shining eyes. 'Mary! Dickon! I shall live forever and ever!'
Just then, old Ben Weatherstaff peered over the garden wall and gasped in horror, believing Colin was a dying cripple who should not be outside. Furious at being pitied, Colin gripped the arms of his chair, gritted his teeth, and stood up on his own two feet!
With Dickon and Mary supporting his elbows, Colin took his first steady steps across the soft green grass. Old Ben wept tears of joy, and together they sang a hymn of thanksgiving beneath the blossoming apple trees.
Every day throughout the golden summer, the three children spent secret hours in the garden. Colin exercised his limbs, helped dig the soil, and ate hearty meals of fresh bread and warm milk. His cheeks grew rosy, his shoulders broadened, and his body grew strong and vigorous.
Meanwhile, far away in the Austrian Alps, Mr. Archibald Craven was wandering in sorrow. One peaceful evening beside a blue mountain lake, he felt a strange, sweet peace fill his weary heart, as if a heavy burden had been lifted. That night, he dreamed he heard his late wife's voice whispering: 'Archibald, come home to the garden.'
Mr. Craven packed his bags and hurried back to Yorkshire. Arriving at Misselthwaite Manor, he walked directly toward the locked garden wall, his heart pounding with painful memories. Suddenly, he heard youthful laughter and the sound of running feet coming from inside the walls!
As Mr. Craven reached the ivy-draped door, it burst open, and a tall, handsome boy sprinted out in full stride, laughing triumphantly into the sunlight. The boy stopped and looked straight into his father's eyes.
'Father,' said Colin proudly, standing straight and tall with his mother's luminous gray eyes. 'It is I. The secret garden made me well, and I can run as fast as any boy in Yorkshire!' Tears streamed down Mr. Craven's face as he pulled his strong, healthy son into a loving embrace. Hand in hand, father and son walked back to the grand house in the afternoon light, signaling a new dawn of joy and renewal for Misselthwaite Manor.
