The room was transformed beyond recognition! Living green holly, mistletoe, and ivy draped the walls like a forest. A roaring fire blazed in the hearth, and piled upon the floor in a mouth-watering pyramid were roasted turkeys, geese, mince pies, plum puddings, and glowing red apples. Lounging upon this throne of abundance sat a majestic giant, clothed in a deep green robe bordered with white fur.

'Come in!' exclaimed the Ghost of Christmas Present with a booming, joyful laugh. 'Come in and know me better, man! I am the Spirit of this festive day!' Scrooge bowed his head submissively, having learned that the spirits' lessons were not to be ignored.

Touching the Spirit's flowing green robe, Scrooge was transported instantly onto the bustling streets of London on Christmas morning. People were shoveling snow from their doorsteps, wishing neighbors joy, and carrying dinners to the bakers' shops to be roasted. The spirit sprinkled sparkling drops from his torch upon passersby, instantly mending quarrels and filling hearts with good cheer.

The spirit led Scrooge to the humble home of his underpaid clerk, Bob Cratchit. Inside, Mrs. Cratchit and her children were dressed in threadbare ribbons, setting the table with joyful excitement. Bob Cratchit entered carrying young Tiny Tim upon his shoulders—a frail little boy who walked with a small crutch and wore iron braces upon his thin limbs.

They sat down to a modest dinner of roasted goose, sage and onion stuffing, and a small plum pudding blazing in brandy. Yet they ate with profound gratitude and love. When Bob proposed a toast—'To Mr. Scrooge, the Founder of the Feast!'—Mrs. Cratchit hesitated, but drank it for her husband's sake.

Scrooge watched Tiny Tim closely, noticing how the little boy's sweet face beamed with angelic kindness. 'Spirit,' asked Scrooge with a sudden ache in his chest, 'tell me if Tiny Tim will live.'

'I see a vacant seat in the poor chimney corner,' the Ghost replied in a solemn tone, 'and a crutch without an owner, carefully preserved. If these shadows remain unaltered by the Future, the child will die.' Scrooge hung his head in sorrow, pierced by his own past words: 'If he be like to die, he had better do it, and decrease the surplus population.'

Next, the spirit whisked Scrooge to his nephew Fred's bright and lively drawing room. Fred, his charming wife, and their friends were laughing heartily, playing party games like blind-man's buff and charades. Fred raised a glass to his grumpy uncle: 'He is a comical old fellow, but I pity him. A Merry Christmas to Uncle Scrooge, wherever he may be!'

As midnight approached, Scrooge noticed the Spirit of Christmas Present growing visibly older, his hair turning gray. From beneath his green robe, the spirit revealed two wretched, ragged children clutching at his feet—a gaunt boy and a weeping girl. 'They are Man's,' the spirit said sorrowfully. 'This boy is Ignorance; this girl is Want. Beware them both!'

As the clock struck twelve, the green spirit vanished, and Scrooge saw a solemn, hooded phantom draped in deep black robes gliding toward him like a shadow across the snow. This was the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come.

The dark spirit spoke no words; it merely pointed a slender, shrouded hand forward. It brought Scrooge to the Royal Exchange, where wealthy businessmen joked casually about the death of an unpopular rich man, wondering who would inherit his money and declaring they would only attend the funeral if a free lunch was provided.

The spirit then led Scrooge to a filthy rag-and-bone shop in a squalid alley, where three thieves were selling stolen sheets, curtains, and even the burial shirt stripped from the dead man's bed. 'He frightened everyone away when he was alive, to profit us when he was dead!' laughed an old woman.

Trembling, Scrooge begged the spirit to show him someone who felt tenderness or sorrow for this death. The phantom transported him back to Bob Cratchit's quiet home. The house was silent as a tomb. Bob wept quietly in the upstairs room, mourning the loss of little Tiny Tim, whose crutch rested untouched beside the hearth.

'Specter,' cried Scrooge in agony, 'something informs me that our parting moment is at hand. Tell me who that dead man was!'

The spirit led Scrooge through an iron gate into a neglected churchyard overrun with weeds. The phantom pointed its outstretched finger toward a solitary, moss-covered gravestone. Creeping forward on trembling knees, Scrooge wiped away the snow and read the chiseled name: EBENEZER SCROOGE.

'No, Spirit! Oh no, no!' Scrooge fell to his knees and grasped the spirit's dark robe in desperate prayer. 'Hear me! I am not the man I was! Why show me this if I am past all hope? Assure me that I yet may change these shadows you have shown me by an altered life!'

Scrooge clutched his hands in frantic repentance. 'I will honor Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year! I will live in the Past, the Present, and the Future! The Spirits of all Three shall strive within me!' As he wept and prayed, the dark phantom's robe shrank, collapsed, and dwindled into his own bedroom bedpost.

Yes! The bedpost was his own, the room was his own, and best of all, the Time before him was his own to make amends! Scrooge leaped out of bed, laughing and crying all at once. He threw open the window to the crisp, bright morning. 'What day is it today, my fine fellow?' he called to a boy in Sunday clothes. 'Today? Why, Christmas Day!' shouted the boy. Scrooge sent the boy to buy the prize giant turkey and send it anonymously to Bob Cratchit's home, gave a lavish donation to the charity gentlemen, spent a joyful afternoon at his nephew Fred's party, and raised Bob Cratchit's salary the very next morning. Scrooge became as good a friend, as good a master, and as good a man as the good old city ever knew, and to Tiny Tim, who did not die, he was a second father forever after.
