第 1 冊📘 CEFR A2・初級King Arthur and the Sword in the Stone
在混亂的古代不列顛,一座神秘的巨石中插著一把寶劍,唯有真正的天命王者才能拔出。年輕謙遜的少年亞瑟在命運指引下拔出石中劍,開啟了英勇與正義的傳奇篇章。
In the ancient days of Britain, after the death of the noble King Uther Pendragon, a dark shadow fell over the land. Without a true king to rule, greedy lords and ambitious knights fought bitter wars for power. Roads became dangerous, villages burned, and the poor people cried out for peace and justice.
In those turbulent times, the wise wizard Merlin placed a great spell upon the land. On a snowy Christmas morning in London, the churchyard revealed a miraculous sight: a massive square block of white marble, atop which rested a steel anvil. Thrust deep into the iron anvil was a magnificent, gleaming broadsword. Inscribed upon the golden hilt were words written in shining letters: 'Whoso pulleth out this sword of this stone and anvil, is rightwise King born of all Britain.'
Hundreds of proud knights and mighty warriors traveled from across the kingdom to try their strength. Strong barons pulled with all their might, but the blade did not move a single fraction of an inch. After weeks of failure, the lords grew impatient and decided to hold a great New Year's tournament, hoping to prove who was the bravest champion.
Among those traveling to the tournament was Sir Ector, a noble country lord, accompanied by his newly knighted son, Sir Kay, and his young foster son, Arthur. Arthur was a quiet, humble boy of fifteen years, known for his kind heart, patience, and loyalty.
When they arrived at the tournament grounds, Sir Kay suddenly realized with horror that he had left his battle sword behind at their lodging. 'Arthur, my brother,' Kay pleaded urgently, 'ride back to our inn and fetch my sword, or I cannot fight in the tournament!'
Arthur quickly turned his horse and galloped back to the town. But when he reached the lodging, the doors were locked tight, and everyone had gone to the jousting field. Desperate not to let his brother down, Arthur remembered seeing a sword standing in the quiet churchyard nearby.
'I will borrow that weapon for Kay,' Arthur said to himself. 'I will return it the moment the tournament ends.' He walked into the empty churchyard, grasped the golden hilt of the mysterious blade with his bare hands, and pulled gently. The sword slid out of the stone as smoothly as a blade drawn from a velvet sheath!
Arthur ran back to the field and handed the gleaming weapon to Kay. When Sir Kay looked at the ancient inscriptions, his eyes widened with shock. He recognized the sword of the stone! He brought it immediately to his father, Sir Ector, who demanded to know where it had been found.
Returning to the churchyard, Sir Ector asked Arthur to place the sword back into the anvil. Arthur did so easily. Then, Sir Ector and Sir Kay tried with all their strength to pull it out—yet neither could budge it. But when young Arthur touched the hilt once more, he drew the blade forth effortlessly.
Sir Ector and Sir Kay fell to their knees before the boy. 'Father, why do you kneel to me?' Arthur asked in confusion. 'Because you are my king,' Sir Ector replied with tears of pride. Though proud barons resisted at first, the common people rallied behind the humble boy who had been chosen by destiny. Arthur was crowned high king of Britain, dedicating his life to honor, chivalry, and the defense of the weak.
