第 1 册🌱 CEFR A1・入门级The Tortoise and the Hare: Slow and Steady Wins the Race
In a bright and sunny meadow, there lived a boastful young hare who never grew tired of bragging about his extraordinary speed. Whenever other animals gathered near the stream, the hare would leap into the air, race across the grass, and laugh loudly.
'No one in this entire valley can run as fast as I can!' the hare boasted proudly, twitching his long ears. 'I challenge anyone here to race against me!' The foxes, squirrels, and badgers turned away, knowing how swift the hare truly was.
To everyone's surprise, a quiet voice spoke from the tall grass: 'I accept your challenge, friend Hare.' It was the slow and steady tortoise, carrying his heavy shell on his patient back.
The hare burst into hysterical laughter, rolling on the soft green grass. 'You? Race against me?' he scoffed. 'Why, you move so slowly that it takes you half a day just to cross a single garden!'
'Keep your boastful words until the finish line,' the tortoise replied calmly with a polite nod. The clever old fox agreed to act as the official judge and marked out a long racecourse across the rolling hills to a tall oak tree in the distance.
The next morning, all the forest animals gathered along the path to watch the contest. 'Ready, set, go!' barked the fox, dropping a dry leaf to the ground. In a flash of dust, the hare dashed forward and disappeared over the first hill.
The tortoise did not panic. He placed one sturdy foot in front of the other, moving forward at his steady, unhurried pace. Step by step, without stopping to rest, he followed the winding trail.
Halfway through the race, the hare looked back and could not see the tortoise anywhere. 'That foolish creature is miles behind!' the hare chuckled to himself. 'The afternoon sun is so warm and pleasant. I shall take a quick nap under this shady apple tree, and when I wake up, I can easily sprint across the finish line.' The hare closed his eyes and soon fell into a deep slumber.
Meanwhile, the sun moved across the clear blue sky. The tortoise walked on steadily under the heat, never slowing down, never turning aside. He quietly passed the sleeping hare beneath the apple tree and continued onward toward the distant goal.
When the hare finally opened his eyes, the afternoon shadows were long. He jumped to his feet and sprinted with all his might toward the tall oak tree—but it was too late! The tortoise had already crossed the finish line to the cheering applause of the forest crowd. The humble tortoise looked back at the breathless hare and smiled: 'Slow and steady wins the race.'
