第 2 册🌱 CEFR A1・入门级The Boy Who Cried Wolf: The Price of Truth
On a sunny hillside near a peaceful farming village, a young shepherd boy was tasked with watching over the village flock of fluffy white sheep. His job was simple: keep the animals safe, make sure none wandered into the ravine, and sound the alarm if danger appeared.
However, the young boy found the long days terribly dull. Sitting alone on the grassy slope with only sheep for company, he wished for excitement. 'Nothing ever happens on this boring hill,' he complained, kicking a pebble into the grass.
One afternoon, a mischievous idea popped into his head. He took a deep breath, cupped his hands around his mouth, and ran toward the village shouting with all his might: 'Wolf! Wolf! A fierce wolf is attacking the sheep!'
Hearing his panicked cries, the hardworking villagers dropped their farming tools, grabbed wooden pitchforks, and rushed up the steep hill to rescue the flock. But when they arrived breathless at the pasture, they found no wolf at all—only the boy rolling on the grass in fits of laughter.
'Do not cry wolf when there is no danger, young man!' the village elder warned sternly, shaking his head in disappointment. But the boy only chuckled as the tired villagers trudged back down the hill.
A few days later, boredom overcame the foolish boy once again. Looking down at the peaceful village, he decided to play the trick a second time. 'Wolf! Wolf! Help, please! The monster is in the flock!' he screamed at the top of his lungs.
Once again, the kindhearted villagers dropped their chores and raced up the rocky slopes to protect the animals. And once again, they found the shepherd boy pointing at them and laughing loudly at his foolish prank. 'A false alarm is no joke!' scolded an angry blacksmith.
Later that week, as the evening sun dipped behind the dark western mountains, a real disaster struck. A huge, hungry gray wolf crept out of the shadowy forest, baring its sharp white teeth and stalking toward the terrified sheep.
Terrified out of his wits, the shepherd boy scrambled up a tall rock and screamed in genuine agony: 'Wolf! Wolf! Please help me! A real wolf is here!'
Down in the village, the farmers heard his desperate shouts, but they only smiled and shook their heads. 'He is trying to fool us again,' they said to one another. 'We will not fall for his lies this time.' Nobody went up the hill. The wolf scattered the flock, and the boy was left alone in the darkening twilight, weeping bitter tears as he learned the painful truth: nobody believes a liar, even when he tells the truth.
