Once upon a time, on the edge of a deep and silent forest, there lived a poor woodcutter with his wife and two young children. The boy was named Hansel, and the girl was called Gretel. The family had very little food, and when a harsh winter brought famine to the land, they could barely find enough bread to eat.
One cold evening, lying awake in bed, Hansel overheard his stepmother telling their father that they had no food left. 'Tomorrow morning,' she whispered, 'we must take the children deep into the woods and leave them there, for we cannot feed four mouths.' The father protested with tears in his eyes, but his wife insisted until he sadly agreed.
Gretel wept bitter tears, but clever Hansel comforted his sister. 'Do not cry, dear Gretel,' he whispered. 'I have a plan.' Hansel crept out of the cottage under the bright moonlight and filled his pockets with smooth white pebbles that gleamed like silver coins in the darkness.
Early the next morning, the family set off into the dense woods. As they walked along the winding trail, Hansel kept stopping to drop a small white pebble behind him. When they reached the thickest part of the forest, the father built a warm fire and told the children to rest while he cut wood. Weary and exhausted, Hansel and Gretel soon fell asleep.
When they awoke, night had fallen, and they were all alone in the dark forest. Gretel began to sob, but Hansel took her hand. 'Wait until the moon rises,' he said softly. When the silver moon climbed into the sky, the white pebbles glittered on the path like glowing stars. Hand in hand, the children followed the trail all the way back to their cottage.
Their father rejoiced with all his heart when he saw them safely return. But only a few months later, food became scarce once more, and the stepmother demanded that they leave the children even deeper in the wilderness. That night, the door was locked tight, and Hansel could not gather pebbles outside.
The next morning, Hansel received a single small crust of bread. As they walked deeper and deeper into the unknown forest, Hansel crumbled the bread in his pocket and secretly dropped tiny crumbs along the path. But when the children awoke in the darkness and looked for the trail, they found nothing at all—thousands of hungry forest birds had eaten every single crumb!
Lost and frightened, Hansel and Gretel wandered through the vast forest for three long days. They were cold, hungry, and their feet were sore. Just as they felt ready to give up, a beautiful snow-white bird landed on a branch and sang a sweet melody, fluttering ahead as if asking them to follow.
The bird led them to a sunlit clearing, where a wondrous sight greeted their eyes. Standing before them was a charming little cottage built entirely of sweet treats! The walls were made of rich gingerbread, the roof was tiled with crisp sugar cookies, and the clear windowpanes were spun from sparkling spun sugar.
Overcome with hunger, Hansel broke off a piece of the crispy roof, and Gretel nibbled on a round windowpane. Suddenly, the door creaked open, and a very old woman leaning on a wooden crutch hobbled out. 'Welcome, sweet children,' she said with a crooked smile. 'Come inside and eat your fill.'
The children stepped inside and enjoyed a delicious meal of milk, pancakes, and honeyed fruit. But the old woman was not a kind grandmother; she was a wicked witch who built sweet houses in the forest to trap unsuspecting children. Early the next morning, she seized Hansel and locked him inside a dark iron cage, ordering Gretel to cook rich meals so her brother would grow fat.
Every morning, the nearly blind witch hobbled to the cage and commanded, 'Hansel, stretch out your finger so I can feel if you are plump enough to eat!' But clever Hansel held out a dry chicken bone instead. The witch, feeling the thin bone, wondered why the boy never seemed to gain any weight.
After four weeks of waiting, the impatient witch could wait no longer. 'Fetch water, Gretel!' she snapped. 'Fat or thin, today I shall bake your brother!' She lit a roaring fire inside the large brick oven and rolled out heavy dough on the table.
'Crawl inside the oven,' the witch commanded Gretel, 'and tell me if the temperature is hot enough to bake bread.' But clever Gretel sensed the witch's evil trap. 'I do not know how to climb inside,' Gretel said innocently. 'The opening seems far too narrow.'
'Silly goose!' screeched the witch. 'The door is plenty big enough—look, even I could fit inside!' The witch leaned her head deep into the roaring oven. In that decisive moment, Gretel gave her a mighty push, slammed the heavy iron door shut, and bolted the iron latch tight.
Gretel ran straight to the cage and unlocked the iron gate. 'Hansel, we are free!' she cried. Before leaving the cottage, they discovered wooden chests overflowing with glittering pearls and precious gemstones. Filling their pockets to the brim, they hurried through the forest until they reached a wide lake, where a kind white swan carried them across. Soon, they saw their father's cottage in the distance. The father ran out and embraced his brave children with tears of joy, and with the witch's treasure, they lived happily together, never knowing hunger again.
