Book 1🌱 CEFR A1・BeginnerZeus gives Pandora a mysterious box with strict instructions never to open it. Driven by curiosity, she lifts the lid, unleashing sorrows upon the world — but deep at the bottom, a radiant gift called Hope remains.
In the ancient days when the world was young, people lived in peaceful harmony. There were no painful illnesses, no bitter cold winters, and no sorrow to darken the days. Men and women laughed freely under the warm sun, and life was filled with endless joy.
High on Mount Olympus, however, the mighty king of the gods, Zeus, was angry. A clever titan named Prometheus had stolen sacred fire from heaven and gifted it to humanity. To balance the gift of fire, Zeus ordered the gods to craft the first woman—a creature of wondrous grace and beauty. Each god gave her a special gift: beauty from Aphrodite, musical talent from Apollo, and rich wisdom from Athena. They named her Pandora, which means 'the all-gifted.'
Before sending Pandora down to earth, Hermes presented her with a magnificent box crafted from dark wood and bound with gleaming golden bands. 'Take this as a wedding gift,' Zeus warned her in a solemn voice. 'Keep it safe, but remember: you must never, under any circumstances, open this box.'
Pandora was welcomed on earth by Epimetheus, the gentle brother of Prometheus. They were married in a joyful celebration, and for many months, they lived happily together. The mysterious wooden box rested upon a table in their quiet home. Whenever Pandora walked past it, the polished wood seemed to glow softly in the candlelight.
As the weeks passed, a quiet curiosity began to torment Pandora's mind. 'Why would the gods send a gift that cannot be opened?' she whispered to herself. 'What marvelous treasures could be hidden inside? Perhaps royal jewels, or robes spun from starlight?' Each day, her curiosity grew stronger, like an unquenchable flame.
One quiet afternoon, while Epimetheus was away in the fields, Pandora could resist no longer. She approached the table and touched the golden latch. 'Just one tiny peek,' she thought. 'I will open it for only a second, and then close it tight.' With trembling fingers, she unlocked the golden clasp and lifted the heavy lid.
Suddenly, a dreadful sound erupted from the chest—a terrifying swarm of dark, winged creatures burst into the room! With sharp shrieks and buzzing wings, they swirled around Pandora's head. These were all the evils of the world: sickness, sorrow, jealousy, anger, poverty, and cruel death. Before Pandora could slam the lid shut, the dark cloud flew out the window, scattering across the earth to bring hardship and suffering to all mankind.
Pandora fell to the floor in tears, overwhelmed by guilt and despair. But as she wept, a tiny, sweet sound came from inside the empty box—like the gentle fluttering of delicate wings. A warm, comforting voice whispered: 'Open the box once more, dear Pandora. Do not be afraid.'
Wiping away her tears, Pandora carefully lifted the lid one last time. Out flew a tiny, radiant creature, glowing with soft, golden light. It was Hope—the secret gift that the gods had placed at the very bottom of the chest. Hope brushed against Pandora's cheek, healing her sorrow and promising that no matter how difficult the world became, hope would always remain with humanity to conquer despair.
