Once upon a time, a humble Country Mouse lived in a cozy little home under the roots of a tall oak tree at the edge of a golden wheat field. His life was simple, peaceful, and quiet. Every morning, he went out to collect fresh seeds, acorns, dried peas, and wild berries. He drank clean dewdrops and listened to the sweet songs of birds in the forest. He was very happy and contented with his quiet life.
One sunny afternoon, his cousin, the Town Mouse, came from the city for a visit. The Country Mouse was excited to see his dear relative. With a warm smile, he invited his cousin into his small home and shared the best food he had in his pantry: a handful of crisp barley, dried peas, and fresh roots. "Please eat and make yourself at home!" said the Country Mouse generously.
The Town Mouse tasted a small dry pea, but he looked very disappointed. "My dear cousin," said the Town Mouse with proud manners, "how can you live such a boring, poor life? You live like an ant in a dark hole, eating hard seeds and dry roots! You have no idea what real luxury and delicious food taste like! Come with me to the big city. I live in a grand palace where the tables are full of sweet cakes, rich cheese, and roasted meat every night!"
The Country Mouse was amazed by his cousin's exciting stories about glittering chandeliers and delicious food. Full of curiosity, he agreed to travel to the city with the Town Mouse. They walked through the night and finally arrived at the great city mansion.
The Town Mouse led his cousin through a small hole in the wall into an enormous dining room. The Country Mouse could hardly believe his eyes! On a huge wooden table covered with a clean white tablecloth lay the delicious leftovers from a grand dinner: slices of yellow cheese, sweet cakes, strawberry jam, and fresh bread. "Help yourself, my friend!" whispered the Town Mouse proudly. "This is how civilized mice dine every single evening!"
The Country Mouse had never seen or smelled such wonderful food before. His mouth watered, and he reached out his paws to take a bite of a sweet honey cake. But just as his teeth touched the sweet food, the heavy wooden door burst open with a loud bang! Two huge guard dogs ran into the room barking loudly, followed by a human servant carrying a bright light and a big hungry cat!
"Run for your life!" screamed the Town Mouse in terror. The two frightened mice jumped down from the table and ran across the floor as fast as their legs could carry them. They squeezed into a tiny crack in the wall just a second before the dog's sharp teeth snapped behind them. Shivering in the dark hole, the Country Mouse held his breath for an hour, terrified that the hungry cat would catch them.
When everything was quiet again, the Town Mouse smiled and whispered: "Do not worry, cousin! That happens sometimes. Come back to the table, the delicious food is still waiting for us!" The Country Mouse took a deep breath, looked at the grand dining room, and shook his head firmly with new wisdom.
"No, thank you, my cousin," said the Country Mouse wisely. "You may keep your rich cakes, yellow cheese, and grand palace, served with constant fear, danger, and terror. As for me, I prefer my simple bread and dry peas in the quiet countryside, where I can live in safety, peace, and true freedom!" And with that, the Country Mouse ran out the door and hurried all the way back to his beloved home in the wheat field, happier and more thankful than ever before.
