第 1 册🌱 CEFR A1・入门级The Cracked Pot
挑水夫的一只水桶因裂缝沿途漏水而深感自责,但挑水夫告诉裂桶,正是因为它一路洒落的甘霖,路旁才盛开出满径繁花。接纳自己的不完美,缺点也能化为独特祝福。
In a peaceful village near misty green mountains, an old water bearer worked faithfully every single day. Across his strong shoulders rested a sturdy bamboo pole, and hanging from each end was a large clay water pot. Every morning at sunrise, the old man walked down the steep mountain path to a clear river, filled both pots to the brim, and carried the heavy load uphill to his master's big house.
One of the pots was brand new, strong, and perfectly shaped. It never leaked a single drop, and at the end of the long uphill walk, it always delivered a full pot of water. But the other pot was older and had a noticeable crack running down its side. Because of this flaw, by the time the water bearer reached the master's kitchen, the cracked pot was only half full, having leaked precious water all along the dusty trail.
For two full years, this daily journey continued without change. The water bearer delivered only one and a half pots of water to his master each day. The perfect pot was very proud of its great work and accomplishments. It often boasted: "Look at me! I am strong and reliable. I never waste my master's hard labor, and I always deliver every drop of water!"
Meanwhile, the poor cracked pot felt sad, ashamed, and useless. It saw itself as a defective failure that could only complete half of its job. Day after day, it watched the water drip slowly from its crack onto the dry ground, feeling inferior and sorry for the hard-working old man.
One morning, as the water bearer rested by the sparkling river to fill the pots, the cracked pot could not hold back its tears any longer. In a trembling, sad voice, it spoke to the old man: "Master, I am so deeply ashamed of myself, and I want to apologize to you with all my heart." The kind water bearer looked at the old pot with gentle eyes and asked: "Why are you ashamed, my dear pot? What have you done wrong?"
"For these past two years," wept the cracked pot, "I have only been able to deliver half my load of water. Because of this ugly crack in my side, water leaks out all the way up the mountain. You work so hard carrying this heavy pole uphill, but you only get half the reward because of my flaw! I am broken and useless!"
The old water bearer smiled warmly and shook his head with great kindness. "Do not cry, my faithful friend," he answered softly. "As we walk back up the mountain path to the master's house today, I want you to look closely at the side of the road."
As they climbed up the hill under the morning sunshine, the cracked pot looked down as instructed. To its great surprise, it noticed that on its side of the path, there was a magnificent garden of colorful wild flowers stretching all the way up the mountain! Bright red poppies, sweet white lilies, and golden daisies danced happily in the breeze, filling the fresh air with lovely perfume and attracting colorful butterflies. The beautiful sight brought a warm smile to the pot's sad heart.
When they arrived at the master's gate, the water bearer put down his pole and asked: "Did you see the lovely flowers along our path? And did you notice that they grow only on your side of the road, and not on the other pot's side? That is because I have always known about your crack, and I decided to use it!"
The old man pointed to the blooming flowers and explained with a tender smile: "Two years ago, I planted flower seeds along your side of the trail. Every single day as we walked back from the river, you watered those seeds with your gentle drops. For two whole years, I have picked these gorgeous flowers to decorate our master's dining table and bring beauty into our village. If you were not exactly as you are, with all your cracks and imperfections, our master's house would never have had such beauty!"
Hearing these wise and loving words, the cracked pot finally understood the true value of its existence. It realized that what seemed like an embarrassing flaw was actually a unique blessing that brought life and joy to the world.
