In the majestic realm of Asgard, home of the Norse gods, there lived Thor, the mighty God of Thunder. Thor was renowned across the nine realms for his colossal strength, his blazing red beard, and above all, his magical war-hammer named Mjolnir. Mjolnir was the greatest weapon in existence: whenever Thor threw it, lightning crashed, mountains crumbled, and the hammer always flew faithfully back into his iron-gloved hand.
With Mjolnir at his side, Thor protected Asgard and the mortal realm of Midgard from the fierce and terrifying frost giants of Jotunheim. The giants feared the thunder god and his hammer more than anything else in the cosmos. But one chilly morning, peace in Asgard was shattered in an instant.
Thor awoke in his great palace of Bilskirnir, stretched his muscular arms, and reached out to grasp his beloved hammer beside his bed. His hand swept through empty air. He sat up, rubbed his eyes, and searched under his furs, behind the wooden pillars, and across every stone in the hall. Mjolnir was gone!
Thor's fiery red beard bristled with fury, and his eyes flashed like storm clouds. The very walls of his palace trembled as he bellowed in rage. 'Someone has stolen my hammer while I slept!' Thor roared. He immediately sought out Loki, the clever and cunning god of mischief.
'Loki, listen carefully!' Thor whispered fiercely. 'A disaster has struck Asgard! My hammer is stolen, and neither gods nor mortals know of it yet. We must find it before the giants discover that Asgard is defenseless!'
Loki's sharp mind went straight to work. 'Let us go to Freyja, the goddess of love and beauty,' Loki suggested. 'She possesses a magical cloak of falcon feathers that allows the wearer to fly swiftly across the skies.'
They hurried to Freyja's golden palace. 'Freyja,' Loki pleaded politely, 'will you lend us your falcon cloak so I may fly to the land of the giants and search for Thor's hammer?' Freyja agreed instantly, saying, 'I would lend it to you even if it were made of silver, and trust it to you were it made of pure gold.'
Loki fastened the feathered cloak around his shoulders and leaped into the air. With powerful sweeps of his wings, he soared above the clouds, crossed the icy roaring sea, and landed in the dark, frozen mountains of Jotunheim, the realm of the giants.
There, sitting atop a high grassy mound, was King Thrym, the arrogant and monstrous ruler of the frost giants. Thrym was casually plaiting golden collars for his giant hunting dogs and smoothing the manes of his horses. When he saw Loki land, a wicked grin spread across his ugly face.
'How fare the gods in Asgard? How fare the elves?' Thrym mocked in a booming voice. 'And why have you come alone to the land of the giants, little Loki?'
Loki answered carefully: 'The gods are troubled and full of sorrow. Tell me, Thrym, have you hidden the Thunderer's hammer?'
Thrym laughed with a sound like an avalanche crashing down a mountain. 'Indeed I have!' the giant king boasted proudly. 'I have buried Mjolnir eight leagues deep beneath the frozen earth, where no god can ever reach it! And no one shall ever hold that hammer again—unless you bring me the fair goddess Freyja to be my bride!'
Loki flew swiftly back to Asgard, the falcon feathers whistling in the wind. He found Thor waiting anxiously by the palace gates. When Loki delivered the giant's outrageous ransom demand, the gods went to Freyja and asked if she would wear a bridal veil to save Asgard.
Freyja was so overcome with furious indignation that her golden necklace, the famous Brisingamen, snapped and burst from her throat. 'You must think me shameless and mad with desire if you think I would marry a filthy frost giant in Jotunheim!' she shouted, refusing with absolute fury.
The gods assembled in solemn council in the great hall of Valhalla. Without Mjolnir, the giants would soon march on Asgard and destroy the divine realm. As the gods debated in despair, Heimdall, the wise watchman of the rainbow bridge who could see into the future, stood up with a sly smile.
'I have a plan,' Heimdall announced. 'Let us dress mighty Thor in a white bridal gown! We will place a bridal veil over his face to hide his beard, hang golden keys from his belt, adorn his chest with glittering jewels, and place a neat bridal headdress upon his head!'
Thor turned as red as his beard. 'The gods will mock me forever if I dress as a woman!' Thor protested indignantly. But Loki grinned and placed a hand on Thor's shoulder. 'Quiet, Thor! If you do not win back your hammer, the giants will conquer Asgard by tomorrow. I will dress as your humble maidservant and accompany you to Jotunheim!'
And so, with grumbling and reluctant curses, the mighty God of Thunder allowed himself to be wrapped in layers of fine silk and veiled in thick lace. Loki dressed as a demure bridesmaid, and together they boarded Thor's golden chariot, drawn by two swift goats whose hooves struck sparks across the sky as they raced toward Jotunheim.
When King Thrym looked out from his fortress and saw the chariot approach, he leaped with joy. 'Rise, my giant kinsmen!' Thrym shouted. 'Prepare the feast! Decorate the benches! The goddess Freyja has arrived to become my queen!'
The wedding banquet was grand and noisy. Great platters of roasted meat and giant wooden casks of mead covered the long oak tables. But as the feast began, the 'bride' displayed an astonishing appetite: Thor devoured an entire roasted ox, eight colossal whole salmons, and all the sweet pastries baked for the women, washing it all down with three full barrels of strong mead!
King Thrym watched in utter disbelief. 'Never in all my centuries have I seen a maiden eat so fiercely, nor a bride drink so deeply!' Thrym gasped.
Loki quickly leaned forward and whispered with sweet charm: 'The poor goddess has been so breathless with excitement to see you that she could not eat or drink for eight full days and nights!'
Flattered by the flattery, Thrym leaned in beneath the lace veil to steal his first kiss from his bride. But the moment he lifted the veil, he recoiled in sheer terror: Thor's eyes burned with furious red fire, flashing like jagged lightning bolts! 'Why are the bride's eyes so terrifying?' Thrym stammered.
Loki chuckled softly: 'The fair bride was so eager for her wedding that she has not slept a single wink for eight long nights!'
Delighted and thoroughly convinced, Thrym smiled greedily. 'Now, let us sanctify the sacred marriage vows!' the giant king commanded. 'Bring forth Mjolnir from beneath the earth! Lay the sacred hammer upon the maiden's lap, so that the goddess of love may bless our union!'
Two massive giants carried the heavy iron hammer into the hall and placed it reverently upon Thor's silk-covered knees. The moment the cold iron handle touched Thor's fingers, Thor's heart laughed with fierce triumph!
With a colossal roar that shattered the feast tables, Thor tore off the lace bridal veil, raised Mjolnir high above his head, and brought it crashing down! Blinding lightning filled the hall, thunder shook the frozen peaks, and with a single sweep of his hammer, Thor struck down King Thrym and shattered the fortress of the frost giants.
Thor and Loki boarded their goat chariot and rode home victoriously across the Bifrost rainbow bridge, Mjolnir safely in hand. The laughter of the gods echoed across Asgard for weeks to come, celebrating the day the mighty Thunderer wore a bridal gown to save the cosmos.
